How Esophageal Stenting is Changing the Treatment Landscape in East Africa

East Africa has one of the highest incidence rates of esophageal cancer in the world and disproportionally high mortality rates. Patients usually present with advanced disease and physicians have had limited options to provide them with safe and effective palliative care. To address this problem, physicians and researchers have partnered to bring quality stents and training to hospitals in the region.
There is a need for more research in this high-risk region to understand the prevalence of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Meanwhile, continuing to expand access to quality, affordable stents and endoscopy training will provide treatment options alongside clinical capacity-building efforts in the region.
