The following charts detail our gender pay gap for UK (excluding Northern Ireland) workforce as of 5th April 2020 (pay) and in the 12 months up to 5th April 2020 (bonus). In August 2019 Boston Scientific acquired BTG which increased the overall footprint in the UK. These additional UK employees have been included in this year’s Gender Pay Gap analysis. Hourly Rate Gap
On average women are paid 17 percent less than men in our UK (excluding N.l.) workforce. We are confident that women and men are largely paid the same for comparable roles. The overall difference in average earnings identified in this disclosure is due primarily to the underrepresentation of women in senior leadership posts. We are pleased to have seen an improvement in the hourly rate gap through our continued initiatives since last year. We will continue to work to reduce this gap over the coming years.
Bonus Gap
Looking specifically at the average bonus gap between men and women, the difference is 47 percent. The increase in the mean bonus gap was mostly influenced by a high level of bonuses paid to employees as a result of the acquisition of BTG. Additionally, it is also driven by the underrepresentation of women in leadership roles as noted above; more men are in senior positions and senior positions attract higher performance bonuses.
Proportion of males and females in each quartile band
The population is divided into four equal parts or ‘quartiles’, from the lowest paid to the highest paid based on the calculated hourly pay rate. This breakdown of hourly rates by defined quartiles reflects the gender differences in our workforce with a greater proportion of men in higher paid quartiles. The acquisition of BTG has resulted in a more balanced gender split across the lower quartile.
Proportion of males and females receiving a bonus
This graphic illustrates that 98 percent of men and 97 percent of women received a bonus payment in the 12 months leading up to April 5th, 2020. This is an increased proportion of both women and men receiving a bonus compared to last year.
