About Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS)

Living in constant pain for an extended period of time can have a devastating impact on quality of life for many patients.

SCS therapy can help manage chronic pain — even when other therapies have failed.

SCS may be prescribed for chronic intractable pain of the trunk and/or limbs, including unilateral or bilateral pain associated with the following: failed back surgery syndrome, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) Types I and II, intractable low back pain and leg pain. Many people with failed back surgeries have had success with the SCS. It is most commonly used to treat low back and lower extremity pain.

How SCS Works

One of the advantages of SCS therapy is that the patient gets to try out an external version of the device to see if SCS is a treatment option for their pain.

SCS is generally considered effective:

  • If the patient's pain is reduced by at least 50%
  • If the patient is able to get back to your daily activities
  • If the patient's need for pain medication is reduced
  • If the patient is able to relax and sleep better

SCS Innovation

At Boston Scientific, we have a long history of product innovation. We believe that meaningful innovation is focused on improved outcomes and greater pain relief for the patient. Providing more pain relief to a broader spectrum of patients is the guiding principle behind our continual development of next-generation products. By providing 32 contacts — twice the number of contacts available with other SCS systems — the Spectra WaveWriter™ SCS System offers more coverage of the spinal cord for the management of chronic pain. Boston Scientific specifically developed the Precision Spectra System to achieve better therapy outcomes. We invite you to compare Boston Scientific SCS to other SCS systems.
